Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten
Learning for children in the early years revolves around family, school and themselves. Students will meet new friends and classmates. They will learn the conventions of school and to follow simple instructions. They will develop an understanding of their place in the world. They will acquire knowledge, skills and understanding through the many teacher-directed activities and hands-on experiences available to them. Success is self-reinforcing and we encourage our students to reflect on their learning journey as a means of fostering confidence and positive achievement.
Our Early Years Programme forms a balanced approach to teaching and learning. Play-based pedagogy informs, engages and empowers children, whilst our explicit intentional teaching is used to focus on literacy, numeracy and scientific investigation skills. Learning occurs through active investigation, shared thinking and listening and responding to children whilst making learning visible. From three years of age our children are encouraged to wonder, ask questions and explore and to strive to understand the world around them.
Our outdoor areas are highly valued in an effort to extend and develop thinking and investigation skills in all areas of learning. Through planned and spontaneous play experiences, children form relationships, share, co-operate, develop self-control, test ideas and friendships, extend their range of experience and form associations between themselves, events and concepts. A significant part of the success of our Early Years Programme is the quality and passion of our dedicated staff.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a tool integrated into the curriculum with extensive use of Interactive Whiteboards in the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms. ICT is used as a powerful medium to communicate and record student learning in the early years and to bring the outside world into the classroom.
Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2
The junior primary years are critical to the foundation of literacy, numeracy, creativity, inquiry and social skills. The Pre-Primary to Year 2 programme provides students with a core of essential learning that promotes a depth of understanding across a variety of subjects. The curriculum is dynamic, well balanced and academically challenging with blocks of learning dedicated to the Key Learning Areas with specialised instruction in sport, languages, music, library and art.
We believe all children are unique and wish to guide them in maximising their potential. Staff recognise that their role is about inspiring our children, making learning fun and ensuring that all children experience success.
Learning includes whole class, group and individual activities that focus on a holistic understanding of ideas and concepts. Learning is focused on the total growth of the developing child, meeting intellectual, physical and emotional needs while educating hearts and minds.
Through discussion, role-play and real problem-solving, students develop a wide range of thinking strategies and group participation skills.
Junior Primary is about setting a solid grounding in positive work habits, dress and behaviour standards. It’s about helping our children establish positive friendships and to teach them how to work and play effectively with others while developing their own resilience and perseverance skills.
The home-school connection is important and we welcome family members to the school, to participate in school activities, excursions and as classroom helpers during the term.
